Debbie Adams, M.P.A.

Director

Debbie Adams is passionate about both cultural competency and mental health. As a biracial and bilingual woman raised in the culturally diverse San Francisco Bay Area, she has firsthand experience with both the barriers and blessings of holding cultural norms that differ from those around her. She also sees the necessity of understanding varying cultural norms in her husband’s work as a resident physician and psychiatrist at UC Davis Health. When cultural competency is not attained in the healthcare setting, it can be a matter of life or death.

Debbie has worked as a volunteer grant writer for nonprofit organizations from San Francisco to North Carolina. She earned a Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in Nonprofit Management in 2018 from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a bachelor degree in English Teaching with a minor in Editing from Brigham Young University. Previous to her graduate studies, she taught middle school Language Arts and Journalism in Durham, NC and a high school college preparatory course to at-risk youth in Provo, UT. She also traveled to American Samoa to teach micro-enterprise and health. Her award-winning writing is published in magazines, literary journals, and online.
